"I am really bad at this."

"This will never work."

Negative thoughts like these have the power to disrupt our entire day, leading to a downward spiral of emotions. A bad mood can evolve into a persistent state of hopelessness. Even worse, repeating these phrases can create a self-fulfilling prophecy, solidifying the negative belief as part of your identity.

It doesn't have to be this way.

Affirmations, with repetition, can change your attitude to reflect a helpful and positive mindset. Let's dive into affirmations, understand their power, and explore a list you can use for your own personal growth.

What Are Affirmations?

Affirmations are positive phrases, set in the present tense that represent the outcomes you desire to see in your life. When using an affirmation, you're typically seeking to reframe a negative situation or reinforce an optimistic belief system.

Why Are Affirmations So Powerful?

What makes affirmations powerful is the influence they can have over a key area of the brain that is responsible for neuroplasticity.

Our brain's have the ability to strengthen or weaken connections linked to memory and learning. By repeating positive affirmations, we can strengthen neural pathways associated with those beliefs, ultimately shaping a more optimistic mindset. Kendra Cherry explains the concept of neuroplasticity in her article on Verywell Mind: www.verywellmind.com

How To Create Effective Affirmations

  • Affirmations are about you
  • Keep it short

    How To Use Affirmations

Using affirmations boils down to what works best for you. For example, I typically like to say them aloud. I'll repeat them as many times as makes sense to me or for my situation.

Other times, I find it helpful to write them down, so I can review and silently affirm their message within my thoughts.

Most importantly, I've learned that pairing affirmations with actionable steps shifts my mindset to believe my goals are achievable.

    Conclusion

Affirmations are a great starting point toward letting go of negative thoughts, and removing limiting beliefs. It's through the repetition of speaking or writing these positive phrases that transformation of your mindset becomes possible. Over time I think you'll find that using affirmations will shift how you perceive yourself and the world around you, for the better.
